| Let's Talk about the Florist Gloxinia Florist Gloxinia is a member of the Gesneriad family, just as are African violets and streptocarpus.  Sinningia's have a bulb or a round ball for part of it's root system. Gloxinia's have a rhizomatous root system which we will talk about later. Have you ever gotten a Florist gloxinia as a gift, enjoyed the flowers and the next time you looked, it was all done blooming and its dying and you can't stop it. So it died in spite of you trying to keep it a live and you throw it in the garbage. Well, guess what, you threw away a live plant. Florist Gloxinia's come up, grow and bloom, then they like to take a nap. It may sleep up to 6 months. So, the next time you get one and it looks like its dying, let it go to sleep, quit watering at the first sign of dormancy. Let the pot totally dry out and put it somewhere where you can check on it every couple of weeks. When it decides its time, you will see new growth coming out of the top. This would be a great time to repot it and get it ready for the new season. Grow it in the brightest light possible with some sun, like morning sun would be great. In just 6 weeks or so you will see new buds blooming and you are ready to watch the show.......
